I've released my new Manta routing Max/Max for Live patch. The MantaRouter eases (hopefully) the process of setting up meaningful communication between the Manta and your favorite DAW or software synth.

http://www.damonholzborn.com/projects/

For help/questions/comments use this forum thread since it will email me if someone posts (and someone else might be able to answer if I'm unavailable).

Requirements

- Macintosh OS X or Windows (XP or later)
- Ableton Live with Max for Live -or- Max 5 -or- Max Runtime
- Manta Max object v1.0 or later
- Peter Elsea's free Lobjects library for Max

Features

- Max for Live version that works directly from within Ableton Live (Max for Live add-on required).
- Max version for use with your favorite DAW or softsynth. If you don't own Max/MSP, you can use MantaRouter with the free Max Runtime.
- Rows or columns of pad can be assigned to send continuous data only, leaving the rest of the pads to send note data.
- Manta continuous data can be sent as MIDI CC, a Max message, or Max for Live message.
- Independent scaling/clipping of velocity, continuous, max-continuous, and slider input value.
- User editable musical scales are mapped across the note pads.
- Notes pads can be displayed as MIDI note number or note name.

Hi,

A couple of questions:

1) I use the MIDIroutesimple for now, and how can I assign one of the sliders to pitchbend - is that at all possible? I have one of them assigned to Modwheel which has a cc - but what to do with the pitchbend?

2) I would like to use a visualizer (to have nice leds on all the time) but also want to use the MIDIroutesimple - is that possible?

3) Is it possible to have some kind of visualization, that inverts leds by touch - as to having a lid led, and when touching that hexagon it turns on momentary - and vice versa?

4) Is it possible to use the MIDIroutewithcont (continous control) setup as to only modify the cc value sent from the first or last touched hexagon (as to play with some kind of "aftertouch" for the midichannel. I wouldn't like to use different midichannels that is.
I used the Manta during the COP15 in december 09 - at an official ceremony (broadcasted live nationwide) where Desmond Tutu was speaking on top of my ambient piece and the danish queen listening. Got a lot of questions afterwards about what it was :-) Will post third video soon which features even more of the Manta. I custom-mapped in Ableton Live by using keyzones and different Sampler-instruments along with the Scale plugin. The Manta is only featured shortly in the beginning - but hope you enjoy anyway :-)

Hi,
I'll get this forum started... I posted a video of a performance of my work for the Wet Ink Ensemble playing all instruments I designed and built. It includes two people playing manta, both of which are using two mantas at once. These mantas have special resonators built for them - I call them the bass manta, and the resophonic manta. The bass manta resonator is built like a double bass, with a spruce front, a maple back, a maple bridge and a maple soundpost. The resophonic manta is built like a Dobro guitar, with a spun aluminum cone contacting a spruce front. Both of them use a large electromagnet to drive the resonator, so audio from the computer (controlled by the manta) sets the resonator into vibration.
The other instruments are my treble and tenor contravielles (kind of like string instruments) and the birl, my electromechanical wind instrument.

Alright,
I've made the transition from an MSP-based Max object to a simple Max object.

I find that this solves a lot of problems users were reporting - and it especially helps with the speed of the LED updates and the latency.

The new object is available at the downloads page, at
http://www.snyderphonics.com/downloads.htm

To use the new object with your older patches, just change the manta~ object to a manta object (without the tilda) and add a metro object to bang it at a fast rate (like 3 ms or so). It doesn't need the DAC to be on anymore.

Enjoy!

Hello Snyderphonics,

Your controller has a lot of appeal to me. More so than the Buchla 222e. However, I rarely use a computer in work except to record. I'd love one of these controllers to have an actual MIDI output port like the C-Thru Axis-64, as opposed to their entry level unit.

I don't know there has been a feasibility study into this. It is the only thing that makes me hold back from ordering a Manta at this time.

It may appear to be a trivial thing to some. In my case, I'm 99% hardware oriented. I've got a Genoqs Octopus & a bunch of modular gear with MIDI to CV converters.

I'd love to hear your thoughts regarding a direct DIN connector MIDI out unit and/or an existing way of converting the data stream to MIDI without a computer involved.

Thanks,

Hello Jeff/Jan/All

I'm having a curious problem here using an older apple laptop, in that the LED control code in the file "!mantaOSC.rtf" is not functioning. The OSCresponderNodes work fine, and the LEDs light up when touched. However the following does not light up the Manta's LEDs on on their own using version 3.31 of SC under OSX.4, PPC.

n = NetAddr("127.0.0.1", 8000);
n.sendMsg("/manta/ledControlEnabled", 1);
n.sendMsg("/manta/leds", 3, 2, 3, 4, 1);

It's not a problem with the Manta itself though, as this code works correctly when tested using the same manta on a newer apple laptop (OSX.5, Intel).

Any ideas?

Regards

Here's an example of using the manta as a monophonic controller, and just using the "maximum" value (which finds whatever sensor value is highest and outputs that) for a general synth parameter. In this example, covering more surface area on a sensor detunes the oscillators, and raises the filter a bit.

This patch uses Darwin Grosse's ddg.mono object, you may have to install it in Max-externals before it will work.
